Word Activities
Spelling is a skill, so like all other skills, meaningful practice is needed to develop one's abilities.
Remember to:
. . . Practise your words everyday.
. . . Think of little words you know inside the big word.
. . . Think about what the word means.
. . . Use knowledge of suffixes & prefixes.
. . . Use rules for adding endings.
. . . Look at syllables in spelling words.
. . . Think about what the word looks like.
. . . Use rhyming words to help spell the word.
. . . Hunt for words that have the sound.
For variety you can have your child:
... Create the words with sticky letters in the bath.
... Write the words in Jell-O powder.
... Write them with sidewalk chalk.
... Write them with bath crayon soap
... Throw and catch a ball or bounce a ball as you spell the words.
... Swim or dance the words.
... Play a variety of spelling games like Hang man, Concentration, Go fish, I'm thinking of a word.....
Help your child copy out the words using these study tips:
1. Look at the word. Notice unusual letters, silent letters, or parts of the word.
2. Say the word slowly, stretching out all the sounds.
3. Trace the letters with your finger, saying each letter out loud.
4. Cover up the word or look away and make a picture of it in your head.
5. Print the word. Say it slowly, stretching the sounds out loud. Now write the word from memory.
6. Check your spelling letter by letter, making any necessary corrections.
