The Writing Process
Prewriting
* Selects a topic, sets a purpose and an audience
* Generates ideas for writing using a web, sketch, think aloud, chart or other form of brainstorming activity
* Begins to consider the form

Drafting
* Writes a first draft
* Focuses on ideas, voice; not mechanics
* Finalizes form

Revising, Editing and Proofreading
* Self edits - clarifies ideas by adding, deleting, moving around words
* Modifies sentence structure, sentence length, word choice, voice, organization
* Uses self-editing sheet
* Checks spelling, punctuation, grammar
* Often uses word wall, dictionaries, spell check, etc.
* Conferences with peers/teacher

Publishing
* Not all student writing goes to the publishing stage
* Makes decision about presentation
* Produces good or final copy by hand or electronically, adding pictures if appropriate
* Shares with intended audience
